OET Speaking: role-play phrases for nurses and doctors

Phrases for opening, building rapport, bringing in the patient's view, explaining clearly and closing, mapped to how OET marks you.

01How the role-plays work

  • Two role-plays, each with a role card and a few minutes to prepare, then about five minutes of conversation.
  • The interlocutor plays a patient, relative or carer. Your clinical knowledge isn't what's marked.
  • Language criteria: intelligibility, fluency, appropriateness of language, and resources of grammar and expression.
  • Clinical communication criteria: relationship building, understanding and incorporating the patient's perspective, providing structure, information gathering and information giving.

02Opening and building rapport

  • “Hello, I'm [name], one of the nurses on the ward. Could you tell me your name?”
  • “Is it all right if we have a chat about how you've been feeling?”
  • “That sounds really difficult. I can see why you're worried.”
  • “Take your time. There's no rush.”

Reading it is step one. Saying it out loud to someone who pushes back is what sticks.
