Résumé bullet points that get interviews

A formula for every bullet, before-and-after rewrites, action verbs, finding numbers you think you don't have, and getting past applicant tracking systems.

01The formula

  • Action verb + what you did + how you did it + the result.
  • Start with the verb. Drop “Responsible for” and “Helped with”.
  • Put the result in numbers where you can: time saved, money, people, percentage, rank.
  • One line is best, two at most. Three to five bullets per role is enough.

02Before and after

  • Before: “Responsible for weekly reports.” After: “Cut weekly report preparation from two days to three hours by automating data pulls in Python.”
  • Before: “Helped customers.” After: “Resolved about 40 customer queries a day, keeping satisfaction above 95%.”
  • Before: “Worked on the university newsletter.” After: “Edited a monthly newsletter for 3,000 students and grew the open rate from 22% to 41%.”

Reading it is step one. Saying it out loud to someone who pushes back is what sticks.
