US F-1 student visa interview: what they check and how to answer
The question areas, how to keep answers short and honest, and the documents to have in your hand on the day.
01What the officer is deciding
- That you're a genuine student with a real study plan.
- That you, or the people supporting you, can pay for your studies and living costs.
- That you plan to leave the US when your studies end. US law presumes a visitor intends to stay unless they show otherwise, so the officer is looking for your reasons to return.
- Interviews are often only a few minutes, so every answer counts.
02The questions come from five areas
- Study plans: what you'll study, why this course, what you'll do in it.
- The university: why this one, which others you applied to, any admits or rejections.
- Your background: previous degree, grades, test scores, any work experience.
- Money: who's paying, what they do for work, how much the programme costs.
- After graduation: what you plan to do and where.

This is general preparation, not legal advice. Rules and required documents change: check the US embassy or consulate page for your country, and talk to your university's international student office about your own case.
