IELTS Speaking Part 3: the abstract discussion that separates 6 from 7

Abstract questions loosely linked to your Part 2 topic. This is where the band is usually decided.

What actually happens

The examiner asks broader, more abstract questions connected to the Part 2 theme — society, change over time, causes and effects.
They may challenge or push back on what you say. That is a normal part of the format, not a sign you are failing.
Answers are expected to be longer and more developed than Part 1.

What the examiner is listening for

Whether you can discuss ideas rather than only your own experience. 'People generally…' and 'It depends on…' are Part 3 moves.
Speculation and hedging: could, might, tends to, is likely to. This is where complex grammar appears naturally.
Whether you can hold a position under mild pressure, or update it gracefully. Both score; freezing does not.

What costs people marks

Answering with a personal anecdote.

Part 3 asks about people in general. Use an example to support a general point, not in place of one.

Agreeing with everything the examiner suggests.

They often push back to see what you do. A reasoned disagreement is worth more than a nod.

Going quiet while you look for a perfect answer.

Think out loud. 'That's an interesting one — I suppose it depends whether…' buys time and scores as fluency.
