Financial Analyst mock interview

The modelling test is the interview. Expect mental arithmetic without a calculator, a question on how a change flows through the three statements, and to explain a variance rather than only report it.

Finance loops are two interviews wearing one name: a technical questioning round where the answers are either right or wrong, and a fit round where the assessment is whether you can hold a conversation under fatigue. Candidates prepare the first and are surprised by the second.

The technical half is closed-book and fast. Interviewers are not looking for derivation from first principles — they want the answer immediately, and then the reason, in that order.

The rounds you can practise

Each round is run by the interviewer built for it, with its own scoring axes — not one generic interviewer asked to change subject.

Financial Analyst interview questions

Six you can expect, in the register interviewers actually use. Answer them out loud before you read the next section — reading a question and answering one are different skills, and only the second is marked.

  1. Depreciation increases by 10. Walk me through all three statements.
  2. Explain a variance you investigated. What was actually going on?
  3. How do you build a forecast you would defend to the CFO?
  4. What is the fastest way to sanity-check a model someone else built?
  5. Roughly what is 17% of 4,200?
  6. How do you handle a business partner who wants a more optimistic number?

The same question, answered badly and well

The gap between these two is most of your score, and it is easier to see than to be told.

Explain a variance you investigated. What was actually going on?

What loses marks

Reporting the variance and its size. Anyone can read the difference between two columns off a report.

What scores

The driver behind it — volume, price, mix, timing, or a one-off — and what the business should do about it, plus whether it recurs next quarter. Explaining rather than reporting is the whole difference between the two levels of this role.

Why Financial Analyst candidates get cut

The post-mortem nobody sends you. These are specific to this loop rather than general interview advice.

Slow or hesitant mental arithmetic. The interview is deliberately closed-book and speed is part of the signal.
Not knowing the three-statement links cold — it is the most predictable question in the loop and it is still failed.
Producing the number the business partner wants rather than the one the data supports.

Start with a general round

For Financial Analyst, a general round runs with Simone structured cases — framework, math, and a crisp recommendation. It is the fastest way to find out which round you actually need to work on. The first session is free.

Before you practise, it is worth reading how the common rounds are marked: tell me about yourself, behavioral questions and STAR, and system design.
