The same section score can land in different bands: 22 is a 4.5 in Reading but a 5.0 in Listening, because ETS maps each section on its own table.

“Comparable” is the midpoint of each band's 0–120 range, which is what ETS prints on score reports during the transition (its example: a 4.5 comes with a 90). Where the midpoint falls on a half point we round up. Sections are scored on their own 0–30 tables.
Common questions
What is 100 on the new TOEFL scale?
A total of 100 is a 5.0 on the 1–6 scale. The 5.0 band covers 95–106 on the old 0–120 scale and aligns with CEFR C1.
What is 90 on the new TOEFL scale?
A total of 90 is a 4.5, which covers 86–94. ETS reports a 4.5 with a comparable score of 90, the midpoint of that range.
What is 80 on the new TOEFL scale?
A total of 80 is a 4.0. The 4.0 band runs from 72 to 85, so anything from 72 up to 85 is a 4.0 — it does not round up to 4.5.
When did the TOEFL score scale change?
ETS moved TOEFL iBT score reports to the 1–6 scale, in half-point steps, on 21 January 2026. For a two-year transition, reports also show a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale.
Is my old TOEFL score still valid?
Scores stay valid for two years from the test date, as before. A university that still quotes a 0–120 requirement can compare it using the ranges on this page; many now quote both.
Why does the same section score give different bands?
ETS converts each section on its own table. A 22 is a 4.5 in Reading but a 5.0 in Listening, and a 26 is a 5.5 in Listening but a 5.0 in Speaking.
