Describe a quiet place you like to go to.

You should say

  • where it is
  • how you found it
  • what you do when you are there
  • and explain why the quiet matters to you

peace and quiet

you could hear a pin drop

switch off

the hum of

a world away from

recharge

The quietest place I know is a stretch of canal path about twenty minutes' walk from my flat. It runs behind an industrial estate, which sounds unpromising, but that's exactly why nobody's there. There's water on one side, a brick wall on the other, and for about a kilometre you can walk without seeing anybody at all. I found it by accident, taking a shortcut, and I've been going ever since — usually early, usually when I need to think about something properly. I wouldn't call it beautiful. There's litter, and a supermarket trolley has been in the water for as long as I've been going. But it's genuinely quiet in a way that parks aren't, because parks are full of people being quiet at each other. What I get from it is a kind of permission to not do anything. I don't take my headphones. I've solved more work problems on that path than at my desk, which probably says something about desks.

  • “Parks are full of people being quiet at each other”是真正原创的观察,而原创性是回答并非背诵的最明显信号。
  • “A kind of permission to not do anything”

  • whether modern life is too noisy
  • the effect of noise on health and concentration
  • how much quiet space cities should provide
