Describe a building you find interesting.
You should say
- where it is
- what it looks like
- what it is used for
- and explain why you find it interesting
striking
out of place
glass and steel
dwarf the buildings around it
weathered
an eyesore
“what it's used for”这一要点需要从图片里得不到的亲身细节。
The building I find most interesting is the old cotton mill on the edge of my city, which stopped being a mill about fifty years ago and is now a mix of flats and studios. It's enormous — six storeys of red brick with these vast windows that were put in so the workers could see what they were doing before electric light. That's the detail I find fascinating. The building's whole shape is a response to a problem nobody has any more. What makes it interesting rather than just old is the way it's been reused. They kept the iron columns inside the flats, so people are living around bits of machinery frame, and there's a section where you can still see where the belts ran along the ceiling. I've been inside twice, visiting a friend who rents a studio there. I think buildings like that are more honest than the ones that get restored to look brand new. It's obviously had a life.
- “A response to a problem nobody has any more”是在具体描述中出现的凝练的抽象思考。
- whether old buildings should be preserved
- how architecture shapes the way people feel
- who should pay for public buildings
Describe a place you like to spend your free time.
Describe a crowded place you have been to.
Describe a quiet place you like to go to.
Describe a city you have visited.
Describe a park or garden you like.
Describe a café or restaurant you like going to.
