Describe a celebration you enjoyed.

You should say

  • what was being celebrated
  • where it took place
  • who was there
  • and explain why you enjoyed it

get together

作名词用:“a family get-together”

the run-up to

a spread

it goes on well into the night

mark the occasion

everyone pitches in

The celebration I enjoyed most was my parents' fortieth wedding anniversary, which we organised for them about two years ago and largely without their knowledge. My sister did most of the work and I take very little credit. We took over the back room of a restaurant they've been going to since before I was born and invited about fifty people, including several they hadn't seen in twenty years. The moment I remember is my father coming through the door and simply stopping, because he'd been told it was dinner with us four. He isn't easily surprised and he was completely undone by it. What made it good wasn't the party itself, which was fairly standard — food, too many speeches, my uncle singing. It was watching two people be looked at by everyone who'd been important to them, all at once, which almost never happens to anyone while they're alive to see it. I'd do it again tomorrow.

  • why societies mark important occasions
  • whether celebrations have become too commercial
  • how national festivals bring people together
