Describe a time when you helped someone.
You should say
- who you helped
- what the situation was
- what you did
- and explain how you felt afterwards
lend a hand
step in
in a bit of a state
put their mind at rest
it was the least I could do
it stuck with me
The time that comes to mind is helping a woman at the train station last winter who'd missed the last connection and had a sleeping child with her. She was quite obviously in trouble and equally obviously not going to ask anyone, which I think is a very common combination. I noticed because she'd been at the same board for about ten minutes. I ended up doing three fairly small things — working out a replacement bus route on my phone, walking her to the right stop, and giving her the cash for it because the machine only took cards and hers had been declined. None of it was heroic and it cost me about forty minutes. What stayed with me was how hard she found it to accept, and how much I recognised that. I'd have been exactly the same. I've thought since that the useful skill isn't being willing to help, which most people are. It's being willing to notice, and then not making it a big thing.
- “Being willing to notice, and then not making it a big thing”
- whether people should be taught to volunteer
- how charities change communities
- why some people help strangers and others do not
Describe a journey or trip that you remember well.
Describe an important decision you have made.
Describe a celebration you enjoyed.
Describe a time when you were late for something.
Describe a problem you solved.
Describe a mistake you made that you learned from.
