Describe a mistake you made that you learned from.
You should say
- what the mistake was
- when you made it
- what the consequences were
- and explain what it taught you
in hindsight
cut corners
it came back to bite me
own up to
a hard lesson
还可以搭配“learn the hard way”
I've been careful ever since
The mistake I'd talk about is one I made early in my career, where I said yes to a deadline I knew was impossible because I couldn't face the conversation about saying no. It was a piece of work that genuinely needed three weeks and I agreed to ten days. I then did what people do in that position, which is work extremely long hours and tell nobody it was going badly, right up until the point where it was too late for anyone to help. We delivered late anyway and it was much worse than if I'd said so at the start. My manager was decent about it and asked me a question I've never forgotten, which was roughly: at what point did you know? And the honest answer was day two. What I learned is that the cost of bad news goes up every day you sit on it, and that the conversation I was avoiding was always going to happen — I just got to choose whether it happened early and small or late and large.
- “Early and small or late and large”
- whether people learn more from failure than success
- how workplaces should respond to mistakes
- why admitting mistakes is difficult
Describe a journey or trip that you remember well.
Describe an important decision you have made.
Describe a celebration you enjoyed.
Describe a time when you were late for something.
Describe a time when you helped someone.
Describe a problem you solved.
