Describe a film you enjoyed watching.
You should say
- what it was about
- where you watched it
- who you watched it with
- and explain why you enjoyed it
it's based on
the cinematography
a plot twist
gripping
it had me in tears
it stands up to a rewatch
The film I'd talk about is one I saw fairly recently called Past Lives, which I went to knowing almost nothing about, which I'd recommend as a way of watching films. It follows two people who were close as children in Korea, are separated when one emigrates, and then reconnect at intervals across about twenty-four years. Very little happens in it, in the sense of events. What I found remarkable is that it's a film about a decision nobody in it ever quite makes, and it manages to be tense the whole way through without any conflict in the ordinary sense. I watched it with a friend who found it slow and we've disagreed about it ever since, quite enjoyably. What stayed with me was the ending, which I won't describe, except to say it does the thing where almost nothing is said and it's completely devastating. I've thought about it more than films I'd have said at the time I enjoyed more.
- “A film about a decision nobody in it ever quite makes”
- how streaming has changed the way people watch films
- whether films reflect or shape society
- the value of a country having its own film industry
Describe a song or piece of music you like.
Describe a website you use often.
Describe a television programme you like.
Describe an interesting piece of news you read or heard about.
Describe a podcast or radio programme you listen to.
