Describe a song or piece of music you like.
You should say
- what it is
- when you first heard it
- how often you listen to it
- and explain why it appeals to you
catchy
upbeat
the chorus kicks in
it takes me back to
on repeat
it gives me goosebumps
The song I'd choose is one my father used to play on Sunday mornings when I was young — an old ghazal, sung by a man whose voice sounds like he's been awake for three days. I couldn't understand most of the words at the time; the Urdu is fairly literary and mine was and is domestic. What I responded to was entirely the sound of it. I've since looked up the lyrics properly and they're about loss in a way that would have meant nothing to me at eight. That's the interesting part, actually. I liked it for one reason as a child and I like it for a completely different reason now, and it's the same three minutes. I put it on rarely, because it's tied so specifically to that flat and that time of the week that it has an effect out of proportion to a song. My father is still alive, I should say. It's not that kind of memory. It's just gone.
- “It's the same three minutes”
- “A voice that sounds like he's been awake for three days”
- why music affects people emotionally
- how young people discover music today
- whether traditional music is worth preserving
Describe a film you enjoyed watching.
Describe a website you use often.
Describe a television programme you like.
Describe an interesting piece of news you read or heard about.
Describe a podcast or radio programme you listen to.
