Describe a historical place you have visited.
You should say
- where it is
- when you visited
- what you learned there
- and explain why it is important
date back to
表示年代的标准动词:“it dates back to the twelfth century”
ruins
restored
a sense of history
preserved
brought home to me
I'd like to talk about a fort about two hours inland from my home city, built in the seventeenth century and now largely a ruin. You can drive most of the way and then there's a fairly punishing climb up the last section, which I suspect was the original point of it. What's left is mostly the outer walls and a couple of water tanks cut into the rock, which are the parts that impressed me most — they're still holding water four hundred years later, which is more than can be said for the flat I rented last year. I went with a school trip first and again in my twenties, and the second visit was much better because nobody was telling me things. What I find powerful about places like that isn't the history exactly. It's the ordinariness underneath it. Somebody had to cut those tanks, and they were presumably bored and hot and thinking about lunch, and that's much easier to imagine standing there than reading about it.
- why countries protect historical sites
- whether history is taught well in schools
- the tension between tourism and preservation
Describe a place you like to spend your free time.
Describe a crowded place you have been to.
Describe a quiet place you like to go to.
Describe a city you have visited.
Describe a building you find interesting.
Describe a park or garden you like.
