  1. Do you have a large family?
  2. Who are you closest to?
  3. Do you see your relatives often?
  4. Do you spend much time with your family at weekends?
  5. Are families in your country usually large or small?
  6. Do you look like anyone in your family?
  7. Did your family influence what you decided to study?
  8. Do you prefer spending time with family or friends?
  9. Is there a family member you would like to know better?
  10. How has family life changed in your country?

  • 给出人数和结构——“there are five of us, two older sisters”——而不是“yes, quite large”。
  • “has family life changed”这个问题偏向第三部分。

there are five of us

we're a close-knit family

take after

I take after my mother”

every other weekend

extended family

we're in touch most days

用“yes”回答“do you have a large family?”。

Do you have a large family?

Fairly large by the standards here — I have two brothers and a sister, and my mother is one of six, so there are a lot of cousins. We're not all close, but there's a group of about eight of us in the same generation who are, and we have a group chat that is almost entirely arguing about football.

Do you spend a lot of time with your family?

Less than I'd like since I moved, which is the honest answer. I call my parents every Sunday, and I see my sister more often because she's an hour away. I make a point of going home for a week in the summer, which is the only time everyone's actually in one place.

Who are you closest to in your family?

My sister, and it wasn't always the case — we fought constantly until she was about twenty. Something shifted when we both moved out and stopped competing for the same things. She's the person I'd ring if something went badly wrong, which I think is the real test of it.
