  1. Whose responsibility is it to protect the environment?
  2. Can individual actions make a real difference?
  3. Should governments make people recycle?
  4. Is economic growth compatible with protecting the environment?
  5. Are people in your country becoming more environmentally aware?
  6. Should air travel be more expensive?
  7. How can cities be made greener?
  8. Do schools teach children enough about the environment?

a drop in the ocean

the onus is on

there's a trade-off between

incentivise

in the grand scheme of things

it's a start

Whose responsibility is it to protect the environment?

Governments, overwhelmingly, and I say that as someone who does the recycling. Individual action matters mainly as a signal — it changes what feels normal, and that shifts what's politically possible. But the arithmetic is that a household's entire annual footprint is a rounding error against one industrial decision. I think the emphasis on personal responsibility has been convenient for the people who'd otherwise be regulated, and it's made a lot of people feel guilty about things that were never going to be decisive.

Are people in your country concerned about climate change?

Concerned in the abstract, yes, and much less willing to accept the specific costs. If you ask whether it matters, almost everyone says yes. If you propose something that makes driving or flying more expensive, the same people object, and I'd include myself some of the time. I don't think that's hypocrisy exactly — it's that the costs are immediate and personal and the benefits are distant and shared, which is a structure humans handle badly.
