  1. Do people buy more than they need?
  2. Are young people good at managing money?
  3. Should personal finance be taught in schools?
  4. Has advertising too much influence on what people buy?
  5. Is it better to save or to spend?
  6. Do people judge others by what they own?
  7. Has online shopping changed how much people spend?
  8. Is there too much pressure to own the latest things?

  4. 在建议类问题上使用条件句结构:“if people were taught this at sixteen, they'd probably…”

live within their means

keeping up with the Joneses

disposable income

impulse buying

it's a false economy

status symbol

用谚语填满整个主题——“money is not everything”、“health is wealth”、“money cannot buy happiness”。

Do you think people spend too much on unnecessary things?

Probably, though I'm wary of the question because 'unnecessary' does a lot of quiet work in it. Almost nothing most of us buy is necessary in any strict sense, and the line usually turns out to be drawn just past whatever the speaker buys. What I'd say more confidently is that a lot of spending is unsatisfying — people buy things they don't use and know at the time they won't. That seems like a better complaint than necessity, and it's one you can actually act on.

Is advertising harmful?

Some of it, and the harm is mostly not the one people name. The usual complaint is that it makes us buy things, and honestly it's not very good at that for any individual product. What it does more effectively is establish the background assumption that dissatisfaction is normal and purchasable, which no single advert is responsible for and all of them together are. That's a hard thing to regulate because you can't point at the one that did it.
