Describe a famous person from your country.
You should say
- who they are
- what they are known for
- how you first heard about them
- and explain why they are admired
household name
put us on the map
rise to prominence
revered
not without controversy
a source of national pride
The person I'd talk about is Dr Verghese Kurien, who most people outside India have never heard of and most people inside it can't avoid the effects of. He was the man behind what got called the White Revolution — essentially he built a system of dairy cooperatives that turned India from a country importing milk into the largest producer in the world. What I find interesting is that he wasn't really a dairy man at all. He'd trained as a mechanical engineer and was posted to a small town in Gujarat more or less against his will, and he stayed for decades. The reason he matters to me is the shape of what he did. He didn't invent a technology; he worked out an arrangement where the farmers owned the business, so the money stayed with the people producing the milk. That's a much less glamorous kind of achievement than most famous people have, and I think it's a more durable one. There's a milk brand in every Indian kitchen that came out of it.
- “A much less glamorous kind of achievement... and a more durable one”
- what makes someone famous today compared with the past
- whether famous people have a duty to behave well
- the effect of social media on fame
Describe a person who has had an important influence on your life.
Describe an older person you admire.
Describe a person who helped you with something.
Describe a friend you have known for a long time.
Describe someone you know who is very good at their job.
Describe a teacher who influenced you.
