Describe an older person you admire.

You should say

  • who they are
  • how you know them
  • what kind of life they have had
  • and explain why you admire them

in her day

live through

“he lived through the war”——用于某人经历过(而非主动选择)的苦难

sharp as ever

a generation that

resilience

take things in their stride

The person I'd choose is my neighbour Mr Fernandes, who's eighty-three and has lived on our street since long before we moved in. He was a postman for something like forty years, in the same district, which means he knows the history of every house on the road — who lived there, what happened to them, which families fell out. Talking to him is a bit like reading a local newspaper that was never printed. What I admire is that he hasn't retreated. A lot of people his age narrow their lives down, and he's gone the other way — he learned to use a smartphone at seventy-nine so he could see his grandchildren in Canada, and he was extremely stubborn about it until he'd worked it out. He also still walks to the market every morning, rain or not. I think what I take from him is that curiosity is a habit rather than a stage of life. He's more interested in things than most people I know half his age.

  • 这个比喻——“a local newspaper that was never printed”——很有分量。

  • how older people are treated in your country
  • what younger generations can learn from older ones
  • whether respect for age is declining
