Describe a person who helped you with something.
You should say
- who this person is
- what the situation was
- what they did to help
- and explain how you felt about it
“They helped me a lot”是这里最弱的一句话。
out of my depth
go out of their way
talk me through
at short notice
I owe them
自然的结尾感想,比“I was very thankful”更好
get back on my feet
I want to talk about a colleague called Daniel who helped me through my first six months in a job I was badly out of my depth in. I'd been hired for a role that turned out to involve a lot more data work than the interview suggested, and I spent the first few weeks quietly panicking and pretending I was fine. Daniel sat opposite me and worked it out almost immediately, which was slightly humiliating at the time. What he did was clever, though. He didn't offer to help — he started asking me to review his work, which meant I had to learn the thing in order to have anything to say. By the time I realised what he was doing, I could more or less do the job. The help mattered because it left my confidence intact. If he'd sat me down and explained everything, I think I'd have felt like a charity case and probably left. As it was I stayed three years.
- “Quietly panicking and pretending I was fine”
- 结尾用一个反事实假设——否则会发生什么——回答了隐含的“and why did it matter”。
- why some people find it hard to ask for help
- whether people help strangers less than they used to
- how communities support their members
Describe a person who has had an important influence on your life.
Describe an older person you admire.
Describe a famous person from your country.
Describe a friend you have known for a long time.
Describe someone you know who is very good at their job.
Describe a teacher who influenced you.
