  1. How has education changed in your country over the last few decades?
  2. Should schools focus more on practical skills or academic subjects?
  3. Is it better to study alone or in a group?
  4. Do you think class sizes affect how much children learn?
  5. Should university education be free?
  6. How important is it for adults to keep learning?
  7. Do exams measure ability accurately?
  8. What makes someone a good teacher?

“There's an argument that exams are the fairest option available, but…”

on the whole

there's a case for

it varies enormously depending on

tend to

arguably

in the long run

Do you think university education should be free?

In principle I'd say yes, though I think the argument for it is often made badly. The strongest case isn't fairness to the individual student — it's that a country with more graduates is more productive, so the spending returns to the state anyway. What complicates it is that free tuition tends to benefit the middle class disproportionately, because they're the ones who make it to eighteen with the grades. So I'd want it paired with far more money spent much earlier. Free university on its own would probably widen the gap it's meant to close.

How has education changed since your parents' generation?

Enormously in access and surprisingly little in method, I'd argue. Far more people go on to higher education than in my parents' time — my mother was the first in her family and it was unusual, and now it would be unusual not to. But if you walked into a lecture theatre today it would be recognisable to her: someone talking at the front, everyone writing it down. I'd have expected technology to have changed that by now and mostly it's changed the delivery rather than the format.
