  1. Has technology brought people closer together or pushed them apart?
  2. Do people rely too heavily on their phones?
  3. Should there be limits on how much time children spend online?
  4. Will artificial intelligence replace many jobs?
  5. Is online communication as good as face-to-face?
  6. Who should be responsible for protecting people's data?
  7. Has technology made people less patient?
  8. Do older people struggle to keep up with new technology?

“It depends whether you mean staying in touch with family abroad or scrolling in the evening”就是7分的句子。
在这里,留有余地的将来表达——“I'd imagine”、“it could well”——比笃定得分更高。

it cuts both ways

up to a point

I'd be wary of saying

a double-edged sword

it could well be that

on balance

Has technology made people less social?

Less social in person, more connected at distance, and I don't think those cancel out. The genuine loss is in the weak ties — the person you'd have spoken to in a queue or on a train, who you now don't because you both have a screen. Those interactions seemed worthless and there's reasonable evidence they weren't. What technology has been very good at is keeping strong ties alive across distance. My sister lives four hours away and I know more about her week than I did about my flatmate's twenty years ago.

Should governments regulate social media companies?

I think they have to, and I'm fairly pessimistic about how well it'll be done. The case for it is straightforward — these are the largest publishers in history and they're the only ones with no liability for what they carry. The difficulty is that the people writing the rules generally don't understand the systems, so regulation tends to arrive late and aimed at the previous problem. I'd rather have imperfect regulation than none, but I'd hold expectations fairly low.
