  1. How have family structures changed in your country?
  2. Are extended families becoming less common?
  3. Should grandparents be involved in raising children?
  4. Do people spend enough time with their families?
  5. Is it better to live near your relatives?
  6. Why do some people choose not to have children?
  7. How do families keep in touch when they live far apart?
  8. Are family relationships more important than friendships?

traditionally

there's less of a stigma around

my parents' generation

it's becoming the norm

for better or worse

close-knit

「are extended families less common?」

How have family structures changed in recent decades?

The biggest change where I'm from is that the extended household has largely gone. My grandparents lived with my parents for years and that was completely ordinary; now it's rare enough that people comment. What replaced it is smaller, more mobile households, which suits careers and doesn't suit childcare or old age at all. So a lot of what the extended family used to absorb invisibly has become either a paid service or a crisis, and I don't think we've fully worked out the second one.

Should elderly parents live with their children?

I'd say it should be genuinely optional, which it currently isn't in either direction. Where I'm from there's real pressure to say yes, and people who can't manage it carry a lot of guilt about it. In other places the assumption runs the other way and the alternative is expensive and often poor. Neither of those is really a choice. What would actually help is making both options viable, so the decision is about the particular family rather than about what's available.
