Describe an app on your phone that you use often.

You should say

  • what it is
  • how you started using it
  • what you use it for
  • and explain why it is useful to you

at my fingertips

it syncs across my devices

cut down on

notifications

还有“I've turned them off”,这是一个真实的观点

intuitive

a bit of a time sink

The app I use most that isn't a messaging app is a language one — I've been trying to learn Portuguese for about eighteen months with fairly mixed results. I use it every day, generally on the train, in sessions of about ten minutes. What it does well is remove the decision. I don't have to think about what to study, which is the thing that killed every previous attempt I made with books. It just presents the next thing. What it does badly, and I've become quite critical of this, is that it's built to be addictive rather than effective. There's a streak counter and I'm on something like four hundred days, and I'm aware that I sometimes do the minimum to protect the number rather than because I'm learning. That's a design choice, and it's working on me, and knowing it's working doesn't help much. I can read Portuguese reasonably now. I still can't hold a conversation, which tells you something.

  • “Knowing it's working doesn't help much”是对自身行为带着自嘲的清醒观察。

  • how smartphones have changed the way people organise their lives
  • whether people spend too long on their phones
  • who should be responsible for protecting users' data
