Describe a photograph you like.
You should say
- what is in it
- who took it
- when it was taken
- and explain why it is special to you
in the foreground / in the background
candid
capture a moment
you can tell from her face that
faded
takes me back
The photograph I'd talk about is one of my mother at about nineteen, taken before she met my father, which I found in a box when we were clearing my grandmother's house. She's on a beach with two friends I've never been able to identify, she's laughing at something outside the frame, and she's wearing sunglasses that are extremely of their period. What I find compelling about it is that she's a stranger in it. I've only ever known her as my mother, and here's a person who existed before that job started, who is clearly having a very good day and has no idea about any of us. It's slightly unsettling and I like it enormously. I had it framed and it's in my hallway. She's embarrassed by it, which I think is partly the point. I look at it most days without really registering it, and then occasionally I actually see it and it stops me for a moment.
- “A person who existed before that job started”
- how phone cameras have changed photography
- whether people take too many photos
- the role of images in how we remember the past
Describe a piece of technology you find useful.
Describe a gift you received that you liked.
Describe something you bought recently that you are happy with.
Describe an item of clothing you like to wear.
Describe something you made yourself.
Describe an app on your phone that you use often.
