Describe a gift you received that you liked.
You should say
- what it was
- who gave it to you
- when you received it
- and explain why it meant a lot to you
thoughtful
it must have cost a fortune
out of the blue
sentimental value
I still have it
spot on
“explain why it meant a lot”这一要点讲的是人。
The gift I'd talk about is a fountain pen my father gave me when I finished university, which is a fairly conventional present and was not a conventional moment. He isn't a demonstrative man. We'd had a difficult couple of years while I was studying, largely because I'd changed courses against his advice and he'd taken it badly. He handed me the pen in a box, said almost nothing, and it turned out to be the one he'd used through his own degree. It's not valuable. It's a plain steel thing that needs cleaning constantly and leaks if you fly with it. But the choice of object was the message, which is the only way he'd have been able to deliver it. I use it rarely, mostly because I'd be devastated to lose it. What I took from it is that people apologise in whatever language they have, and it's worth learning to read the ones that aren't words.
- “People apologise in whatever language they have”是真正的洞见,从故事中得出,而不是生硬地附加上去。
- 让步和条件结构——“it's not valuable, but”“I'd be devastated to lose it”——在内容的推动下自然出现。
- why people give gifts
- whether expensive gifts are better than thoughtful ones
- how gift-giving customs differ between cultures
Describe a piece of technology you find useful.
Describe something you bought recently that you are happy with.
Describe an item of clothing you like to wear.
Describe a photograph you like.
Describe something you made yourself.
Describe an app on your phone that you use often.
