Describe a book you enjoyed reading.
You should say
- what it was about
- when you read it
- why you chose it
- and explain what you liked about it
a page-turner
it's set in
I couldn't put it down
it stayed with me
a slow burn
well drawn
The book I'd talk about is a novel called Stoner, by John Williams, which I read about two years ago on somebody's fairly aggressive recommendation. It's about an American academic in the first half of the twentieth century whose life is, by almost any measure, a disappointment — a bad marriage, a stalled career, a daughter he loses touch with. That's the whole plot, more or less. It should be unbearable and it isn't. What I liked about it is difficult to explain. The writing is completely unshowy, so you don't notice it working, and then something devastating happens in a sentence that looks like all the others. It made me think differently about what counts as a life worth writing about. I've given it to three people since. One of them found it depressing and we've argued about it twice, which I think is a good sign in a book. It's the one I'd take if I could only keep a few.
- “Something devastating happens in a sentence that looks like all the others”
- whether people read less than they used to
- the difference between reading on paper and on screens
- what role libraries should play today
Describe a piece of technology you find useful.
Describe a gift you received that you liked.
Describe something you bought recently that you are happy with.
Describe an item of clothing you like to wear.
Describe a photograph you like.
Describe something you made yourself.
