Describe something you saved money to buy.

You should say

  • what it was
  • how long you saved for it
  • how you managed to save
  • and explain whether it was worth it

put money aside

tighten my belt

it took me the best part of a year

splash out

make do without

all the sweeter for the wait

The thing I saved hardest for was a second-hand motorbike when I was about twenty-two, which took me the better part of a year. I was working in a call centre at the time and the pay was poor, so I was putting aside a fixed amount every month and refusing to touch it, which involved a fairly grim social life for a while. My friends thought I was being ridiculous. What I remember most isn't buying it. It's the discipline part — the very specific feeling of wanting something in a shop and having a number in my head that made the decision for me. I'd never had that before and it turned out to be the more useful thing. The bike itself was unreliable and I sold it three years later, and honestly I don't miss it. But I still save the same way for anything significant, and that habit is worth considerably more than the bike ever was.

  • “A number in my head that made the decision for me”精确描述了一种内心状态,这很难,而且做得很好。

  • whether young people are good at managing money
  • how attitudes to saving differ between generations
  • whether schools should teach personal finance
